The Island of Dolls, Mexico

The Island of Dolls (Isla de la Munecas) is located in the canals that lies to the south of Mexico City, close to Xochimilco. The story tells that half century ago a little girl drowned in one of these canals. The Island has only one permanent inhabitant, an hermit called Don Julian Santana Barrera. After the death of the little girl he fished out one doll from a canal, thinking was a sign from the evil spirit Barrera decided to hanging the dolls on the trees, making the Island into a shrine to calm the spirit of the dead girl. The dolls have missing eyes and other body parts. Don Julian Santana lived in the Island for 50 years and died in 2001. He was found drowned in the same canal he believed the girl died.
